Innovation Projects 2019

Sustainable Hemp Based Dairy Analogues: ICE-GREEN

Researchers at Lund University have developed a water-based process to recover high quality protein from oil-seed press cake generated during the production of cold-pressed vegetables oils (rapeseed/canola). In this project we intend to exploit this technology to create a Scandinavian alternative to soy for the production of plant based dairy products such as ice cream. To do so we will adapt this technology to hempseed press cake, to recover, characterize and concentrate protein from hempseed in a cost-effective way.

The project was successful thanks to the collaboration between an EIT Climate-KIC partner: Lund University and other third parties from the private sector and the industry

  1.          Lund: academia, technology and catalyzer of the project
  2.          Bofood: industry, alternative dairy producer
  3.          Ingka group: industry and demand side
  4.          Mossagården eko: industry, plantation owner and hemp supplier

The stakeholders involved in the process where Swedish but two of them are owned by IKEA which has an international reach and capacity to scale up.

eCircular (2018–2020)

eCircular Flagship accelerates the circularity of plastic-based material systems and dematerialisation of plastic demand with the vision of carbon-neutral material system in 2050. The flagship thrives for radical digital innovations and their upscaling with focus on waste prevention, e.g. by promoting smart manufacturing solutions, advanced eco-design approaches, new business models and alternative consumption patterns.

Climate Resilience Labelling – Towards a European approach

The project’s overarching objective is develop a viable scaling model for climate resilience labelling in a pan European context. As part of the scaling model we aim to build a consortium for internationalization and prototyping, which will include complementary international activities on climate resilience labelling such as the “Blue Label” developed by Dutch Insurer Achmea, and the German “Hochwasserpass”.

Incentivizing wood us in construction to mitigate climate change (GoWood)

The ultimate aim of the proposed project is to achieve significantly greater GHG emission reductions by incentivizing the enhanced use of wood in construction. The aim is to develop methods for full and complete accounting of the climate actions and climate benefits and attribution of such benefits to the respective actors using innovative technologies.

A Business Model for Bluegreen Solutions to Prevent Flooding and Drought

The project aims to encourage resilient climate solutions through a speed-up of blue green structures for flood and drought protections through new ways of cooperation between private, public and civil stakeholders through a new financing instrument. It proposes to introduce a business model where downstream landowners pay or in other ways compensate upstream landowners to maximize the water retention potential through nature-based solutions.

Hemp Heaven

The building industry today creates a lot of waste and pollution. Building materials with high embodied energy are used, and houses use a lot of resources, both in terms of energy and materials. Our project proposes to build a carbon-negative energy-positive house built with walls of hemp-lime. This project will work on bringing together stakeholders and knowledge in order to create a carbon-negative energy-positive house of hemp!

SA Regional Nordic Hub (RNH): Alternative green and blue plant-based protein production in the Nordic

Regional Nordic Hub will serve as a platform to raise awareness among value chain actors in the emerging protein industry but also to find and apply CSA solutions that can create economic value from the climate challenge in the protein industry sector.

The Blue House

In this project, we want to understand why a more sustainable water management directly connected to buildings is not taking place on a larger scale. What are the main challenges experienced by stakeholders and what are their needs and incentives to contribute to a change in perspectives on water management? The aim is to develop a concept for a Blue House where we identify and bring together different water smart techniques to implement sustainable water management on a systemic scale.

Green is Gold

Our vision in Green is Gold is to position Nature Based Solutions (NBS) as an asset in strategy development and implementation for all cities, and effect tangible change on the ground, by improve the city planning. This first stage of the project is a starting point in developing a process tool. That is why we have worked together to identify added values and effects of NBS, quantify added values and effects of NBS, identify stakeholders and bring them together in order to understand the needs.

Besides Lund University, stakeholders from Vejle, Copenhagen, and Malmö municipalities, as well as the consultancy company MOE, have worked closely together in the project.

Based on the results from this first stage of the Climate KIC project Green is Gold we can conclude that the inclusion of NBS is not a simple process, and that NBS must be considered in all steps of the planning and implementation process, including comprehensive as well as detailed planning and construction. Project was run by Johanna Sörensen.
